Overview
A two-day summer festival held every year on the first weekend of August in central Wakkanai, featuring dance parades, a harbor fireworks display, and a regional products fair. The “Nankyoku” (Antarctic) name reflects the city’s historic ties to Japan’s Antarctic expeditions — the sled dogs Taro and Jiro, who survived the 1958 wintering expedition, were Sakhalin Huskies from the Wakkanai region. Admission is free. 2026 dates have not yet been announced.
