Wakkanai Minato Nankyoku Matsuri is a two-day summer festival held in central Wakkanai each August, marking its 63rd edition in 2026 with dates of August 1-2. Events are centered on the central arcade shopping street, the North Breakwater Dome Park, and the port market area. The "Nankyoku" name reflects the city's historic ties to Japan's Antarctic expeditions. In case of rain, dance events move to August 2 and fireworks move to August 3.
